I’ve never seen a portrait like this. It almost at first has a cartoonish quality, but then you see that it really works beautifully, in an unusual way, to capture the subject, whoever they are. The smear of red on the nose, the straight pink lips, the narrow neck really work to bring out a personality. The blue eyes do this especially and they are riveting, make you take notice. There’s some wonderful painterly aspects in it, especially the hair. Is it by any chance, a self-portrait? It’s really a pleasure.
What a lovely and insightful comment. I could not have said it better myself. It is a self-portrait begun years ago, abandoned prematurely. I recently pulled it out and found something in the expression that felt powerful and authentic. I decided to accentuate rather than bury its emotion, but it took time for me to build up the nerve to post it. Thanks so much for your comment–it makes it feel worth the risk.
