ON DAYS LIKE THESE I think of the people before me, like my grandfather, Alger Wheeler Powell, shown here at age 17 in the front right-hand corner of the 1900 University of Delaware football team photograph (The Blue Hens).
With his wife Elsie he raised four sons (including my father), and tree fruit (mostly apples) in central Massachusetts. He was one of the kindest men I ever met.
